METHOD STATEMENT FOR BRICKWORK

METHOD STATEMENT FOR BRICKWORK

1.  INTRODUCTION / SCOPE
Ø  This method statement covers the requirements, equipments and procedures to be used for brickwork.

2.  OBJECT / PARAMETER
Ø  Following documents shall be considered as reference for execution of the job:
a.   Architectural GFC drawings provided by consultant.
b.   Site instructions.

3.  MATERIALS
Ø  Bricks, Cement, Stone Dust/River Sand, Water, 6mm dia. MS bars.

4.  PRINCIPLE
Ø  An assemblage of bricks properly bounded together in mortar is called brickwork. In normal brickwork, the bricks are arranged and bedded in mortar in such a manner as to form a homogeneous mass of the structure.

5.  APPARATUS / EQUIPMENT
Ø  Kanni, Plumb, Bucket, Thread, Scraper, Brick Hammer, Spirit Level or Bubble Tube, Right Angle, Steel Tape, Fanti.

6.  HEALTH AND SAFETY PROVISION
a.   The work place is to be free from all kind of debris.
b.   Specific safety measures are to be followed as applicable.
c.   All working platforms are to be inspected.
7.  PREPATORY WORK
a.   Obtain relevant approved GFC drawings.
b.   Chipping on the contact area of vertical RCC surface to be done and chicken wire mesh to be fixed with cement slurry.
c.   Layout should be done as per the drawings and the same to be approved by the Project engineer before commencing of brickwork.
d.   Arrange all materials such as bricks, dust, cement and steel.
e.   Cement for next day early hour work to be issued in advance.
f.    Empty cement bags, of 3’ width to be laid before starting of brickwork.
g.   Arrange any support structure like staging for working at heights.

8.  WORKMANSHIP

a.   Face side of brickwork should have proper joints cut (pointing) and all the joints on un-face side shall be filled with cement mortar.
b.   In a brick wall no combination of face and un-face side should be seen in the same wall.
c.   A definite pattern to be followed in the entire project for the face and un-face side in the outer brick wall of the buildings.

9.  PROCEDURE

a.   Bricks should be cured within 30 minutes before its use.
b.   Layout shall be done according to the GFC drawing and same is to be approved by the engineer in-charge..
c.   Proper mortar mix should be prepared through mixture machine only i.e. for 9” brickwork, 1:6 (1 cement: 6 stone dust), and for 4.5” brickwork, 1:4 (1 cement: 4 stone dust).
d.   For 9” brickwork, brick shall be laid in English Bond, unless otherwise specified.

                                       English Bond

e.   For 4.5” brickwork, brick shall be laid in stretcher bond unless otherwise specified.

                                        Stretcher Bond

f.    All loose material, dust to be removed from RCC surface with wire brush and surface to be wetted with water.
g.   Chipping should be done on all RCC members so as to remove any extra concrete on the slab/column and chicken wire mesh to be fixed with slurry (on vertical RCC member). The total gap between RCC and brickwork  should not  be more than 15mm ,this thickness includes cement paste, chicken wire mesh and thickness of mortar.
h.  Brick are to be laid as per the layout, on the bed of mortar, with frog of the brick facing upward and leaving mortar thickness within a range of 10-15 mm on all four side of brick.
i.    Each brick shall be properly placed and set in position by gently pressing into the mortar bed with handle of trowel.
j.    On placing the next brick, joints between the two bricks is to be fully filled with mortar, so that no hollow space is left between the bricks.
k.   Complete layer of brick is to be laid in the stated manner.
l.    Instead of breaking full brick, brick bats are to be brought in use and to be used as closure near the end.
m. Brickwork should be in proper line, level and plumb.
n.  Diagonal and right angles of the room should be as per requirement.
o.   All courses should be laid truly horizontal and all vertical joints in the alternate course shall come directly one over the other.
p.   4.5” wall should be properly keyed in main wall/partition wall, as and where applicable.
q.   1 number 6mm dia MS bar should be used after every 3 layers of bricks in 4.5” thick brickwork.
r.   Last course of brickwork near beam/slab bottom should be properly packed with mortar leaving no gap in between them.
s.    Brick joints on the face side should be filled with mortar & should be raked out up to a depth of 6 mm.
t.    Joints on un-face side to be filled with mortar and to be cleaned using wire brush/coconut broom, on the very same day of brickwork.
u.  Mortar fallen on the laid empty cement bag, is to be collected & brought in use at an interval of every one hour.
v.   Quantity of mortar prepared should be sufficient enough, such that no mortar is left after the closing of work.
w.  Clean the area after finishing of work.
x.   Date of brickwork should be marked to monitor the curing period.
y.   7 to 10 days curing should be done.
10.           INSPECTION
a.   Chipping has been done.
b.   To check layout as per drawing with dimension and diagonal.
c.   Mortar mixing is of specified ratio and is done through mixture machine only.
d.   1 number 6mm dia MS bar should be used after every 3 layers of bricks in 4.5” thick brickwork.
e.   Bricks should be cured within 30 minutes before its use.
f.    Brickwork is in line, level and plumb.
g.   All the vertical joints in alternate courses should be in the same vertical line.
h.  Area is clean after completion of work.
i.    Brick joints to be maintained 6mm deep.
j.    Date of brickwork has been marked.
k.   Joints have been filled and raked properly.
l.    7 to 10 days curing is being done.
